What does Antibes share with Japan?

Updated: Oct 3

More than you'd think! Two Japanese cities - Karuizawa and Mimasaka - display statues presenting works from the French illustrator Raymond Peynet. They share this with Antibes, of course.

He created the famous pair of lovers ('Les amoureux') and represented them on different mediums such as porcelain, jewels, illustrated books, postcards, stamps, advertisements and film posters.

Below, you can spot the lovers at the Peynet Museum in Karuizawa in the Nagano province of Japan.

Peynet chose to settle in Antibes in 1976. Today, the Peynet and Cartoon Museum sits on Place Nationale in the heart of Antibes' Old Town. Right in front of the museum, you'll see the lovers on display.
